India vs New Zealand – World Cup Semi Final 2019

India will be facing New Zealand in the first semi-final of the 2019 World Cup.

India are riding strong after a comprehensive victory against Sri Lanka, and will also gain some confidence after having finished in first place at the end of the league stage.

New Zealand on the other hand, have appeared shaky and vulnerable in the last few games and only finished in the top four at the expense of Pakistan due to a better run rate.

In this article, we shall analyse the two cricket teams and weigh their strengths and weaknesses.

OPENING PAIR COMPARISON
New Zealand’s new opening pair of Henry Nicholls and Martin Guptill has yet to fire in the limited matches that they have played.

If Nicholls’ test record is any indication, he is a classy batsman who has all the shots in the book. As for Guptill, unfortunately he has been disappointing.

Being one of the more experienced players in the squad, its time Guptill rose to the occasion.

Facing the likes of Bumrah and Shami in the initial overs will certainly not be easy, but Guptill has the class and the experience to prove his mettle.

KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma seem to be getting better and better playing together with the duo posting a record 183 run partnership against Sri Lanka, with both Sharma and Rahul getting this recent partnership will greatly excite Indian fans as the pressure is relieved off Virat Kohli and the rest of the middle order, and ensures that India are on route to scoring a huge total.

As for New Zealand they need to make sure that both these players do not get set in, and try to break the partnership as soon as possible.

MIDDLE ORDER COMPARISON
The middle Order of New Zealand s heavily dependent on Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor.

Tom Latham, Jimmy Neesham, Colin De Grandhomme form the latter half of the middle order.

Latham will be coming into this game after a good knock against England, and will look to continue his god run.

Latham will be coming into this game after a good knock against England, and will look to continue his god run.

The burden of scoring runs however lies mostly on Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor. Taylor has so far underwhelmed with the bat, and one feels that Wiliamson has one big knock left up his sleeve.

As for Jimmy Neesham and Colin De Grandhomme, they both have to play a supporting role to Williamson and Taylor and ensure that the runs are coming freely and ensure that the strike is rotated.

Additionally, both players are handy with the ball, and can chip in with key wickets.

The middle Order of India is heavily dependent on Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.

So far, the opening pair of India has been solid and has laid a platform for the likes of Kohli and Pandya to come in and make a big score.

But if the top order were to fail, then the pressure is on Kohli to deliver the runs.

So far, he has been overshadowed by the brilliance of Rohit Sharma, but he has a very important task at hand.

For this he will need the support of Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni, if India are to reach the finals at Lords.

BOWLERS COMPARISON
New Zealand have one the best bowling average in this world, with all bowlers chipping in with wickets.

Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult are the three pacemen who lead the line with the new ball and at the death.

Ish Sodhi has the knack of picking up wickets at crucial times though he can be expensive at times.

The medium pace of Jimmy Neesham and Colin De Grandhomme will come in handy during the middle overs, with Neesham picking up important wickets in the last couple of games.

In the spin department, they have Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner, making New Zealand a formidable bowling attack.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohamed Shami, Bhuvneswar Kumar will be the three new ball specialists for India.

Shami has looked stronger and faster than ever and looks a whole different bowler to what he was a couple years ago. Hardik Pandya can bowl his medium pace in the middle overs.

His ability to take the pace off the ball, and his slower bouncers will a weapon that he will use against a New Zealand side who is coming into this match low on confidence.

In the spin department, they have Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kedar Jadhav, making India a diverse and potentially threatening bowling attack.

My prediction is that if New Zealand win the toss, they should bowl first.

If India win the toss, they should bat first. Either way, India must bat first. New Zealand’s bowling will be the decisive factor whether they will win the game or not.
